Bristol Airport at Lulsgate Bottom in North Somerset is the commercial airport serving the city of Bristol, England and the surrounding area, handling approximately 8.5 million passengers per year. Bristol Airport has one runway designated 09/27 and a simple airfield layout running parallel to the runway. It is surrounded by controlled airspace connecting to the airways and operates using SIDs and STARs.
Bristol aircraft movements comprise mainly passenger jet airliners but does also accommodate a small amount of GA (general aviation). Jet operations take place to the north of the runway and GA operations take place only on the south side of the runway.
All aircraft operating at Bristol must establish radio communication with air traffic control (ATC). All engine starts must be approved by ATC.

Most IFR Departures will depart using the published Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs):
BCN1X – RWY27 – Climb straight ahead. At I-BTS/I-BON D4.5, at or above 3000, turn right to intercept BCN VOR R150. Cross BCN D20 above 4500, cross BCN D15 at 6000 to BCN VOR.
BCN1Z – RWY09 – Climb straight ahead. At I-BON/I-BTS D4.7, at or above 3000, turn left to intercept BCN VOR R125. Cross BCN D30 northbound above 4500, cross BCN D15 at 6000 to BCN VOR.
EXMOR1X – RWY27 – Climb straight ahead. At I-BTS/I-BON D4.5, at or above 3000, turn left onto track 224° towards SOMOT to intercept BRI NDB(L) QDR 245° to EXMOR. Cross SOMOT above 3500, I-BTS/I-BON D15 above 5500, EXMOR at 6000.
EXMOR1Z – RWY09 – Climb straight ahead. At I-BON/I-BTS D4.7, at or above 3000, turn right onto track 267° towards SOMOT to intercept BRI NDB(L) QDR 245° to EXMOR. Cross SOMOT above 3500, I-BTS/I-BON D15 above 5500, EXMOR at 6000.
BADIM1X – RWY27 – Climb straight ahead. At I-BTS/I-BON D4.5, at or above 3000, turn right onto 088°, to intercept HON VOR R217 at 6000 to BADIM.
WOTAN1Z – RWY27 – Climb straight ahead. At I-BON/I-BTS D4.7, at or above 3000, turn left to intercept HON VOR R211 to WOTAN. Cross HON D63 at 6000.
Bristol has a number of published Standard Arrival Routes (STARs), which all terminate at the BRI NDB where holding will take place if necessary.
BRI1A – Arrival via RETSI (UN862/N862, UN42/N42) continue on 184° to AMRAL then RILES then DOBEM. At DOBEM turn left onto NDB(L) BRI QDM 166° to NDB(L) BRI. FL160 by AMRAL Descent below FL160 after RILES
BRI1B – Arrival via L9 to STU VOR then intercept BCN VOR R287 (107°) to BCN VOR via AMMAN then turn right onto BCN VOR R137 to NDB(L) BRI. FL170 level 10NM west OF AMMAN.
BRI1C – Arrival via L9 to CPT VOR continue on CPT VOR R275 to POMAX then turn left onto NDB(L) BRI QDM 251° to NDB(L) BRI. FL220 level by CPT VOR.
BRI2D – Arrival via N864, to BHD VOR intercept VOR BHD R008 to EXMOR via
TINAN and TIVER, continue on NDB(L) BRI QDM 064° to NDB(L) BRI.
BRI1E – Arrival via N864 (see Note 3), to TALGA continue to BCN VOR on R005(185°) then turn left onto BCN VOR R137 to NDB(L) BRI. FL160 level 10NM north of TALGA.
IFR departures from the south/west/north should expect to be initially handled by Cardiff Radar in the descent and subsequently transferred to Bristol Radar once at a lower level, this is due to the airspace structure in the vicinity of BCN/EXMOR. Please observe the published Speed Limit Points (SLPs) on the arrival.
VFR Flights should plan to depart the CTR via one of the published VRPs. Expect a clearance to exit the zone not above altitude 2000ft, however this may vary depending on the situation.
You will be issued with the Bristol VFR Conspicuity code 5070, unless the situation dictates otherwise.
Initial call should be made on the radar frequency, if online, approximately 10 minutes from the zone boundary.
Clearance to enter the zone is usually issued by the aerodrome controller on 133.850 MHz. Expect to enter the zone not above altitude 2000ft, routing via a VRP for a left/right downwind/base join for the runway in use.
Depending on traffic, delaying action may be necessary for sequencing.
All visual circuits are conducted to the south of the airfield unless otherwise authorised.
Circuits should be flown at a height of 1000ft QFE for fixed wing aircraft or 700ft QFE for rotary wing traffic.
Aircraft entering the visual circuit should select transponder code 7010 Mode C for ACAS purposes.
